Anyone who works in paintless dent repair long enough eventually realizes something.

Most PDR technicians are a little… obsessive.

In Episode 60 of the All Access Podcast, Gene Fetty tells the story of a BMW liftgate repair that perfectly illustrates why.

The damage came from a liftgate hitting a garage door while open—creating a severe buckle and multiple stretched areas in the panel.

Body shops quoted a liftgate replacement between $3,500 and $4,500, which was close to half the value of the vehicle.

Instead, the car became a real-world demo panel during the Level Up advanced training class.

When the Metal Refuses to Move

The initial repair plan was simple:

• Apply tension

• Unlock the panel

• Rough it out for the class

But the metal didn’t cooperate.

Heavy German steel combined with severe structural kinks caused the panel to completely lock up.

Multiple pulling strategies failed.

Even heavy tension setups with hydraulic pressure barely moved the panel.

Eventually, several technicians in the class collaborated to break the repair down into smaller sections and begin unlocking the metal.

Slowly, the panel began to move.

The Real Lesson

The repair itself was fascinating—but it revealed something deeper about the mindset of PDR technicians.

Even after the repair became “acceptable,” Gene found himself unable to stop working on it.

Fine tuning.
Chasing reflections.
Cleaning up details.

Why?

Because dent repair often triggers a unique type of professional obsession.

Many technicians feel compelled to push a repair as far as possible simply to prove that it can be done.

Is That Obsession Good or Bad?

In moderation, it’s probably one of the things that drives great technicians to improve.

But it can also turn a simple repair into hours of extra work.

The trick is learning where the line is between:

Professional pride
and
Unnecessary perfectionism.
